Moon Review
i was both excited and skeptical heading into Moon, a low-budget science fiction film from first time director Duncan Jones. After all, it is very easy to be skeptical of any low-budget, emulous science fiction film. Especially when it takes place entirely on the surface of the moon. i was also excited for that exact reason - to see what and how someone can portray emotions and mind states in a series of events through music and film without the help of a major blockbuster budget.  Surprisingly, this was a film that was quite impressive because of the small, independent budget, somehow making the overall visual effects both incredible in its scale and its authenticity. For this, i was already amazed.
Without getting into too much detail, I will say that the film continues down a path that explores a range of themes, everything from work ethics to human genetic manipulation. The film also has a dark gritty retro feel to it. The moon itself describes this feeling, even the poster will give you this same feeling when exiting theater doors pondering about the open-ended ending.. well, it did for me.
The film’s aesthetic and story elements would not have worked without the amazing performance from Sam Rockwell. A fabulous performance as a character that experiences such a wide range of emotions and mental states, Rockwell brings both subtle sadness and vibrant life to the role. Delivering a performance with such range is something that is rare, it reminded me of a little toned-down version of Will Smith in I Am Legend. Also, Kevin Spacey’s GERTY voice-over is eerie and excellent which fitted perfectly in this film. Some may say the film starts slowly, but i found the first half hour to be an important and gripping portrayal of what it would mean to be alone in space, without which the movie would not be as effective.
Even though this movie was not perfect by any means, Moon is probably one of best movies i have seen in a very long time. It is simply unique and unexpected. This film proves that you can bring creativity to life without a Michael Bay-sized budget.i highly encourage anyone to see this film while it is still exclusively playing in selected cities.
